Laboratory Technician
Staff Full-Time

The Laboratory Technician, a full-time position, for the Department of Art, Graphic Design and Art History including equipment maintenance for sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and jewelry and metals areas. Supervise students in the safe operation of power tools and equipment throughout the Department.

Provide help and technical assistance for students working on projects in a variety of media. Maintain an inventory of consumable items and order/purchase replacements in a timely fashion. Assist with ordering, picking up, receiving, storing and distributing supplies and materials. Must be comfortable with computers and have basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

The individual will need to be able to arrange for a flexible schedule, sometimes working with students during scheduled classes and at other times when the studios are vacant.

The tech would be exposed to potential danger in the woodworking shop through the use of the various pieces of equipment and tools used in that area, i.e., table saw, band saw, lather, jointer, planer, miter saw, router and sanders. Another area of potential danger would be in the welding area through various welding processes, i.e., oxy/acetylene, electric arc, TIG and MIG. Exposure to chemicals would be limited to solvents primarily and possibly some acid, patina and chemicals.  In the ceramics studio there would be possible exposure to dust, glaze chemicals, hot kilns. There is occasional noise in the wood shop, welding and foundry areas but not excessive.  Occasionally there is dust created in the studios.

Ability to lift 60 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications:
Vocational/Technical school and two years experience OR HS/GED and four years experience in the use and maintenance of woodworking tools, carpentry and mechanical skills and experience with 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC machines.
Have a valid driver's license and access to an automobile on a regular basis.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Art
Five years experience in the use and maintenance of woodworking, welding/metal fabrication, and foundry tools.  Good carpentry and mechanical skills and experience with 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC machines.
