OSU Graphic Design Students Enter 9th Annual National Student Show & Conference

USGraphic

The Dallas Society of Visual Communication had their 9th Annual National Student Show and Conference April 11–13, 2013. This is the only national competition and conference just for students in design, art direction, illustration, or photography.

35 Oklahoma State University Graphic Design students entered work into the DSVC National Student Show, and several of the students attended the conference. Below, you can read about the show and the conference and see a list of the students who entered work.

The Show

Students exhibit their work against the best in the country and compete for over $15,000 in cash and prizes. The show is judged by five nationally recognized jurors over two days. Awards and cash prices will be handed out for winners in each category, judge's choice, and best overall piece. Scholarships will be awarded to the top sophomore and junior portfolio, and the top three senior portfolios will receive cash prizes, trips, or a huge head start landing a dream job. All work that makes it in the show will be on display for the entire conference.

The Conference

Three days of inspiration from 4 nationally-renowned keynote speakers along with working professional career panels, 15 break-out sessions, and studio tours around Dallas. Students have the chance to get their portfolios reviewed by professionals and maybe even land an internship or a job. They'll go home with new design buddies, great memories, and a huge head start on a career.

Senior Crystal Labrosse wins Women's Faculty Council 2013 Research Award

photo

Art history professor Jennifer Borland with Crystal Labrosse at the WFC 2013 Research Awards Reception at Willard Hall.

Crystal was just one of three undergraduates among a group of fourteen awardees from across campus, as well as one of the only representatives from the humanities. She was also awarded the Council's "Diversity Award," suggesting that the committee was particularly impressed by the subject of Crystal's research and its important contribution to the development of Islamic art within the field of art history. Crystal attended the awards reception held during OSU Research Week at Willard Hall. Her research project is on the film "Women Without Men" by the Iranian-born artist Shirin Neshat and her paper is entitled "Women Without Men: Heaven or Hell." She was accompanied to the awards reception by one of her paper's advisors Dr. Jennifer Borland. Dr. Borland had this to say about her student, "It was such a pleasure to attend the awards ceremony with Crystal. She spoke with eloquence about her project alongside others ranging from poetry to medical research to the immunity of livestock!" Both Dr. Borland and Dr. Louise Siddons advised Crystal's paper which she presented during the Art History Senior Symposium last May.

The Women's Faculty Council Awards recognize both undergraduate and graduate student research done at OSU. Awards were given to fourteen OSU researchers. Completed projects and works in progress are both recognized at these awards and women students in all fields are eligible. The awardee is the sole or primary author of work done at OSU. Summaries of research for theses, dissertations, course projects, and creative works are among the projects submitted.
