Carey Hissey was born and educated in Great Britain. She received her BFA in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Communication at the University of Central England in Birmingham in 1981.

Carey worked as a graphic designer for Arts Councils, Arts Centers and galleries in the Midlands region of England and also illustrated childrens' books, with nine books published to date.

In 1986 Carey moved to Norman, OK. She joined the faculty at OSU in 1988. She is one of the founding partners of the award winning Square Mile Design group, designing corporate materials such as annual reports, catalogs, brochures and exhibition graphics for national and international clients primarily in the banking, real estate and oil industries.
